The jazz analogy is romantic but someone still has to know music theory. The most creative teams I've seen had real craft underneath the improvisation — otherwise you just get noise that everyone politely calls "collaborative.

Jazz also has a leader calling the changes, and everyone in the room knows it. The "no hierarchy, just vibes" version of this usually ends with six people improvising in different keys.
