CEO of Canva. Built a $42B design company by thinking from first principles and using 'Column B'—imagining the ideal future, then working backwards.
Most planning is stacking the bricks in front of you. Column B thinking is imagining the castle on the hill first — what world do you actually want to exist? — and then working backward. The bricks you have today rarely constrain what you can build.
We spent two full years not shipping any product. We were rewriting the entire codebase. It was miserable. But it unlocked simultaneous collaboration, right-to-left languages, cross-platform parity. You can't skip the dark tunnel — you can only walk through it.
